Individuals participating in the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) programs may be eligible for a second social security stimulus check. November 21 was the deadline to request a stimulus check this year. But, there may be a second stimulus package in 2021 if negotiations resume in Washington.
If you’d like to learn more about how your stimulus check may impact your SSDI or SSI benefits, read our blog post here.
What’s Happening in Washington
To date, Congress has not agreed on a second stimulus package. It is unclear if individuals will receive a second stimulus check. But, President-Elect Biden does have a stimulus plan that includes a second check for citizens. Following the new President’s inauguration, Congress will likely take up discussions on stimulus support again and try to reach agreement.
Will I Qualify for a Second Stimulus Check?
Until Congress votes a bill into law, we will not know who qualifies for the second stimulus payment. However, assuming the Heroes Act passes as it’s currently written, we note the act uses the same qualifications as the first stimulus bill.
That means that if you’re receiving SSDI or SSI, you would qualify for a check just as you did in the first round, you would receive the social security stimulus payments. But, you have to have a Social Security number. And, you cannot be a dependent on someone else’s tax return to qualify.
What If I Didn’t File a Tax Return?
SSDI OR SSI claimants who rely solely on these programs as their only income weren’t required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019. Those claimants did not have to file a simple return in order to receive the first stimulus payment under the CARES Act.
Other claimants who may have income outside of the SSI or SSDI programs should seek advice from a reputable tax preparer.
And, even though the deadline is up on receiving the first payment, you may still be eligible to receive a stimulus payment if you haven’t received one to date. The IRS has specific instructions on their online“Get My Payment” tool to help you determine if you qualify.
